Power, Forest and Environment, Agriculture, Science & Technology Minister, Thongam Biswajit, refuted media speculation regarding a potential change in leadership within the state, including the ousting of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. During a press conference following the 133rd Manipur Police Raising Day ceremony, Biswajit stated that he had no knowledge of any such occurrences and chose not to comment further.
“I have no information about any leadership transition or the two-page memorandum that has been mentioned in the media. I cannot confirm the validity of the letter, as I lack the expertise to do so,” Biswajit remarked to reporters when asked about the matter.
Attending the 133rd Raising Day of Manipur Police as Chief Guest at 1st Manipur Rifles Ground, Babupara, Biswajit Singh said, “The State Police role in maintaining law and order and fighting drug menace in the state has been commendable. Destructions of forest area for illegal poppy cultivation cannot be prevented by the forest department alone without the support of the police.”
Posting in his X account, Chief Minister N Biren Singh extended greetings to all the brave officers and personnel. “Today, we celebrate not only your achievements but also the enduring values of courage, integrity, and duty that define the Manipur Police. May you continue to serve with the same spirit and determination in the years to come”, read a post in his X account.
Rajiv Singh, Director General of Police (DGP), commended the police force for their continuous efforts to restore stability and normalcy within the state. “Manipur has endured a difficult period over the past eighteen months, but we are witnessing a gradual improvement. The number of violent incidents has significantly decreased, with only a few isolated cases remaining. The desire for peace is universal, and it can only be realized by diminishing the militarization of society. We require the support and collaboration of the populace to achieve enduring peace in Manipur.” Rajiv Singh remarked.
The DGP acknowledged that it is a challenging time, but emphasised that the Manipur Police, with cooperation from the public, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and other security forces, are addressing the situation as effectively as possible.
He also rejected allegations that police are using excessive force. “The police are community-oriented forces, responding appropriately to the situation to avoid further escalation. Had they employed excessive force, numerous innocent civilians might have been injured while managing the mobs.” Rajiv Singh added.
DGP Rajiv Singh appealed to all communities to engage in constructive dialogue to address the ongoing crisis in the state.
During the ceremony, various police personnel and departments were recognized for their outstanding service. The Lamphel Police Station received the DGP Manipur Trophy for Best Police Station for the year 2024. The Best Police Officer Award for 2024 was awarded to Sub Inspectors L Sarjubala from Bishnupur Women Police Station and Vashum Meena from Ukhrul Women Police Station. Jiribam Police Station and Churachandpur Women Police Station achieved joint second place, while Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West and Bishnupur Police Station shared the third position.
In the battalion category, the 1st Manipur Rifles Battalion was honored as the Best Battalion for 2024. The 2nd Manipur Rifles and the 8th Manipur Rifles (Leikhun, Chandel) jointly claimed the second spot, while the 8th Indian Reserve Battalion (Commando) from Khabeisoi and the 5th Manipur Rifles from Khongjaron secured third place.
