The state of Manipur plunged into mourning on Wednesday following the demise of internationally acclaimed theatre maestro Ratan Thiyam. As a mark of respect to the legendary artist, the government of Manipur ordered the National Flag to be flown at half-mast and cancelled all scheduled entertainment programmes across the state.
Ratan Thiyam, revered globally for his contribution to modern Indian theatre and traditional performing arts, passed away after a prolonged illness. His passing marks the end of a towering era in Manipuri theatre, where his works stood at the intersection of culture, spirituality, and political commentary.
The Government’s tribute reflects the immense cultural and artistic loss felt across the region and the nation.
Condolence messages continued to pour in from organisations and cultural bodies. The United Committee Manipur (UCM) expressed deep grief, calling his death an irreparable loss to Manipuri society. The Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Organisation and Lalit Kala Sangam also joined in mourning, honouring Thiyam’s lifelong dedication to preserving and innovating indigenous art forms.
