Manipur mourns demise of Mr. Maipak;  pays tribute to ‘Son of Manipur” – The Legendary Body Builder

Legendary bodybuilder – known to the country as ‘Son of Manipur’ who had achieved Mr. India title and later Mr. Universe title passed away yesterday. He was 88 years old.
Former Mr Universe has been an inspiration to many young bodybuilders in the state as well as in the country. He left for his heavenly abode while undergoing treatment in connection with his health problem at the Regional Institute of Medical Science yesterday evening.
Maipak was born on June 12, 1935 at Uripok Sorbon Thingel Sinam Leikai in Imphal West district of Manipur. He is survived by his wife, four sons, and three daughters. Born on June 12, 1935, at Uripok Sorbon Thingel Sinam Leikai in Imphal West district of Manipur, he won the Mr India title in 1970.
Later, he represented India in the Mr Universe competition in 1971 in Paris (France), where he bagged the 10th position. Maipak was also an accomplished athlete.
He represented Manipur in the 1958 Delhi National Games in the hammer throw event, where he broke the national record.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh condoled the demise of Mr. Maipak and paid floral tribute joining his last rites.
The Manipur CM said: “My heartfelt condolences on the demise of Nongthombam Maipak, the Son of Manipur.”
“His achievements as Mr India 1970 and as Mr Universe 1971 participant brought pride and left an indelible mark on our state. May his legacy inspire generations to come and may his soul find eternal peace,” he added.
Besides bodybuilding, Maipak was also a renowned athlete in hammer throw shot put, and discus throw in the national competition held at Delhi in 1958. N. Maipak broke the national record in hammer throw and shot put event on behalf of the Manipur team.
