Manipur is the most Militarise society in the World: R.K. Nimai

Consultant to the government of Manipur Dr. RK Nimai today said that Manipur is the most militarised society in the world and there is one security for every five individuals.
Speaking during the inaugural function as guest of honour of the 2-Day National Seminar on ‘Roots Of Conflict Resolution In Manipur: Claims And Counter Claims’ organised by Department of Social Work, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University at Amity Hall, Adimjati Complex today, Dr. Nimai said that Manipur presents a different aspect as there has been a process of communalisation of the armed movement. He said Manipur has also witnessed a different trajectory of history starting with the losing of Kabaw Valley. But there is a view that Kabaw Valley was already with the Burmese, which needs re-examination, he added.
The seminar which is sponsored by Indian council of Social Science Research and was attended by Prof. E Bijoykumar, Dean, School of Social Science, Manipur University (MU), and Sunita L Varte, Director, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU), Regional Campus-Manipur (RCM) as Chief Guest and president respectively.
Terming the kind of seminar as an important one Dr. RK Nimai further said that academicians have refrained to discuss the issue so far.
“It is important that this is systematically and academically discussed so that a solution can be found”, RK Nimai added.
On the present attempt being made by Government by signing suspension of operation to end the insurgency movement Nimai said that Manipur has diverse armed opposition groups and it is difficult to bring them on the negotiation table. He said there is no single solution to the problem of armed conflict in Manipur. Even the Yugoslavian model cannot be applied here; we have to find our own model. Nimai was saying so in view of the historical roots of the present day conflict in the state. He also highlighted the trouble cause by the misused of AFSPA by security troopers.
Chief Guest of the Inaugural Function Prof E. Bijoykumar Singh shared that conflict is the sign of life and it represents the articulation of different sections of the society.
“As needs keeps rising, problems also do get transformed but there is no definite solution to all the problems. In this part of the globe, complex problems have marred. Solution to these issues, some hold that the issues are non-negotiable. On the other hand policy makers have given more importance to management of the issue rather than finding a solution akin to fire fighting”, Bijoy said.
Sunita L Varte, Director who presided the Inaugural Function asserted that conflict arises out of differences. She believes that whatever be the magnitude of the conflict it should not be left unattended.
