Imphal, Feb 18:

The organization Manipur Ima has submitted a memorandum to the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, highlighting concerns over the ongoing crisis in Manipur. The memorandum, signed by the co-Convenor of Manipur Ima, S. Shantikumar, urges immediate action to address the humanitarian and security situation in the state.
According to the memorandum, the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, led to large-scale displacement and destruction. It alleged that members of the Kuki-Zo community attacked the Meitei population, resulting in the burning of homes and the displacement of thousands. Over 60,000 people are currently taking shelter in relief camps, while more than 200 individuals have lost their lives due to the violence. The memorandum urged the President and the Governor of Manipur to ensure that justice is served for those who suffered losses.
The organization also referred to recent remarks made by BJP’s Northeast in-charge, Sambit Patra, during a TV interview, where he reaffirmed that there would be “no compromise on Manipur’s territorial integrity.” Manipur Ima viewed this statement as a positive step and called for the restoration of peace and stability in the state.
Furthermore, the memorandum accused the Kuki-Zo community of pushing for a separate administration, which it claimed was against the historical and geographical integrity of Manipur. The organization expressed strong opposition to this demand and called for strict government action to prevent any attempts at territorial division. It also urged authorities to withhold salaries of government employees who support the demand for separate administration and to take legal action against any encroachments on land belonging to local residents.
In addition, Manipur Ima called on the President to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur to curb illegal immigration. It also raised concerns over large-scale poppy cultivation in areas inhabited by the Kuki-Zo community, claiming that it had led to environmental degradation and a rise in drug-related activities. The organization demanded strict legal measures against those involved in poppy cultivation and urged the government to take concrete steps to put an end to the practice.
The memorandum urged the President to take immediate and necessary action to ensure justice, law enforcement, and long-term peace in Manipur.
