Manipur joined the rest of the country in celebrating the 77th Republic Day with solemnity and patriotic fervour, marked by grand ceremonies at the historic Kangla in Imphal and district headquarters across the State on January 26.
At Kangla, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla unfurled the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salute from 67 march-past contingents comprising the Manipur Police, Manipur Rifles, India Reserve Battalions, NCC, Home Guards, Fire Services, mounted police, band contingents, and various civilian groups. The Governor also inspected the Guard of Honour commanded by Abhijeet Pandey, IPS (Probationer). Fourteen cultural troupes and departmental tableaus highlighted Manipur’s rich cultural diversity.
Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, Members of the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Secretary, Security Advisor, Director General of Police, senior civil and police officers, and representatives of the armed forces attended the ceremony.
On the occasion, the Governor conferred the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service on Deputy Superintendent of Police, CID (Special Branch), Sorokhaibam Rudranarayan Singh, MPS. Medals for Meritorious Service were awarded to several police and fire service personnel, including Inspector Laishram Chaoba Singh, Jemadar Naorem Seilendra Singh, Sub-Inspector Sorokhaibam Santosh Singh, Additional SP Hijam Devendra Singh, MPS, and Leading Firemen Panmei Gaikhaongam and Maibam Sevenson Singh, among others.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Chief Secretary Dr Puneet Kumar Goel paid tribute to the members of the Constituent Assembly and recalled the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950. He described the Constitution as a living charter embodying justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, and called upon citizens to balance fundamental rights with duties to strengthen national unity, peace, and inclusive development.
Earlier in the morning, the Governor unfurled the Tricolour at Lok Bhavan before proceeding to Kangla for the main State-level function.
Across the districts, Republic Day was celebrated with equal enthusiasm. In Kakching, Deputy Commissioner Uppuluri Chaitanya, IAS, hoisted the National Flag at the District Sports Association Ground, highlighting progress in the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons, youth employment initiatives, restoration of transport services, and livelihood projects led by women IDPs.
In Thoubal, Deputy Commissioner Yumnam Robita, IAS, unfurled the Tricolour at Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School Ground, outlining achievements in health, agriculture, education, digitisation of ration card services, and welfare schemes, while calling for communal harmony and civic responsibility.
Bishnupur observed the day at the Mini Secretariat Complex, where Deputy Commissioner Pooja Elangbam took the salute from 24 contingents and highlighted welfare measures for IDPs and the role of security forces in maintaining law and order.
At Jiribam, Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar, IAS, led the celebrations at Jiribam Higher Secondary School playground, focusing on infrastructure development, healthcare expansion, women empowerment, good governance initiatives, and community participation. The event featured cultural performances, distribution of welfare benefits, and commendations to public servants and security personnel.
Tengnoupal marked the occasion at Tengnoupal High School Ground, with Deputy Commissioner Saurabh Yadav, IAS, emphasising border security, employment generation, infrastructure development, social welfare schemes, and livelihood promotion under various flagship programmes.
In Pherzawl, Deputy Commissioner Mannuamching highlighted constitutional values, ongoing and proposed infrastructure projects, and the need for social inclusion and youth engagement during celebrations at Pherzawl Public Ground.
Chandel district celebrated at Maha Union Government Higher Secondary School, Japhou, where Deputy Commissioner Hemant Kumar, IAS, described Chandel as a symbol of unity and resilience, and outlined initiatives in health, education, rural development, housing, and border village programmes.
Republic Day was also observed in Kangpokpi, Noney, Churachandpur, Senapati, Kamjong, Ukhrul, and Tamenglong, with Deputy Commissioners unfurling the National Flag, reviewing march-past contingents, distributing commendation certificates, and addressing gatherings on governance, development, peace, and constitutional values.
Cultural performances, band displays, and participation by students, civil society organisations, and uniformed services added colour and vibrancy to the celebrations across Manipur. The State-wide observance reflected a collective reaffirmation of faith in the Constitution and a shared commitment to peace, unity, and inclusive development as the nation marked the 77th year of the Republic.
