Imphal, Mar 1:

A private member resolution proposed by MLA Leishiyo Keishing for the implementation of the National Register for Citizens (NRC) was elevated to a government resolution by the Manipur state assembly today. The resolution was passed despite the absence of five Congress MLAs, who walked out of the session following disagreements.
The Congress MLAs had urged for the consideration of a private member resolution presented by four Congress members alongside the proposal by MLA Leishiyo Keishing. However, after a brief argument, the speaker proceeded with the session, disregarding the pleas of the Congress members who eventually left the assembly.
Subsequently, MLA Leishiyo Keishing moved the private member resolution highlighting the necessity of implementing the NRC in Manipur to address challenges faced by indigenous communities.
In support of the resolution, N. Biren Singh, the leader of the house, proposed the conversion of the private member resolution into a government resolution. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh underscored concerns regarding unnatural decadal population growth in Manipur, particularly in areas such as Saikot, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, Henglep, and Saikul. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the influx of illegal migrants from Myanmar, citing historical events such as the military coup in 1961, the pro-democracy uprising in 1988, and the recent coup in 2021.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh reminded the assembly that a similar resolution had been passed in August 2023, reaffirming the assembly’s stance and urging the central government to implement the NRC in the state.
