Imphal, Sept 9:
President of All India Congress Committee (AICC) Mallikarjun Kharge took to social media platform ‘X’ to express his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the ongoing crisis in Manipur. In his post, Kharge described PM Modi’s response as an “abject failure,” which he deemed unforgivable, especially given the state’s prolonged violence over the past 16 months.
Kharge pointed out that former Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey had also voiced the frustrations of the people, highlighting that residents were disheartened by the Prime Minister’s absence from the state during the ongoing strife. According to Kharge, despite the escalating violence and the dire situation faced by citizens, PM Modi has not visited Manipur or devoted any time to address the crisis.
He also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Chief Minister of Manipur for what he described as “incompetence.” Kharge referred to reports that the CM had sought the transfer of the ‘Unified Command’—which oversees security operations in the state—from central authorities to the state government. The Unified Command is currently led by Union Home Ministry officials, the state security adviser, and the Indian Army. Kharge emphasized that both PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had failed to take responsibility for security in Manipur, accusing Shah of focusing on election rallies in other states while the violence in Manipur continued unchecked.
Kharge raised concerns about the increasing severity of the violence, mentioning the use of drones and rocket-propelled grenade attacks, which he said had escalated into a national security threat. He accused the BJP of political maneuvering by enacting what he referred to as a “resignation drama” rather than taking substantive action to resolve the crisis.
The Indian National Congress, through Kharge’s statement, issued several demands, including the immediate dismissal of Manipur’s Chief Minister. Additionally, the Congress urged the central government to take full responsibility for the security situation in the state, calling for a robust crackdown on insurgent groups with the support of state forces.
Kharge also emphasized the need for the Supreme Court-mandated and monitored Manipur Commission of Inquiry to expedite its investigation into the ethnic violence. He warned the Modi government not to misuse investigative agencies like the CBI and NIA in handling the crisis.
