Imphal, June 3:
Maybe because of the unbecoming attitude of the Assam Rifles troopers deployed here in the state of Manipur, the majority of the Meitei people seems to lose trust in the Assam Rifles who often called themselves as Friends of the Hill people.
After report of a standoff between the Assam Rifles troopers and the state force at Sugnu police station in Kakching district, women folk at Khurkhul village in Imphal West district continue to resist the Assam Rifles troopers from entering their villages due to fear of giving hands to armed Kuki militants in attacking the Meitei villages in periphery areas. Women vendors at Khwairamband Keithel fled the marketplace due to fear of unwanted incidents after three of the AR armour vehicles parked in the city when the curfew is relaxed.
“We will give all our strength in resisting the AR troopers as they give hands to the Kuki militants in attacking innocent villagers and burning of the houses”, a women protestor at Khurkhul told reporters.
“I have to run away from the market and sell my vegetable here as I fear unwanted incidents at Khwairamband Keithel”, a women vendor who was trying to sell vegetables at Keishamthong told this reporter today morning.
After the district administration relaxed curfew from 5 am to 5 pm today on the pretext of improving the law and order situation in the state, many women vegetable vendors came to Khwairamband Keithel for selling their vegetables. At around 9 am today three AR armour vehicles parked in the middle of the Khwairamband Keithel. Seeing the armour vehicles with AR men coming out, those women vegetable sellers packed up their items and fled from the area due to fear of unwanted incidents.
To many, Assam Rifles are troublemakers. Their presence does not make people secure and people felt that these AR troopers are supporting armed militants in burning the houses in the periphery area.
At almost all the places where people stage peaceful demonstrations urging the government to douse the burning Manipur, people voice against the Assam Rifles troopers. Many had called for the removal of the AR troopers alleging that these ARs are the ones siding with the armed Kuki militants in burning the villages of the Meitei people.
