Macha Leima observes 54th Foundation Day

Manipuri Chanura Leisham Marup popularly known as Macha Leima – one of the oldest women’s organisation of the state today celebrates its 54th Foundation Day at Lamyanba Shanglen , Palace Compound in Imphal East.
Salam Ulka Devi, Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women graced the occasion as Chief Guest while President of the Macha, Leima Wangkheimayum Amusana presided over the function.
Speaking on the occasion Advisor of the Macha Leima, Khangambam Anandi, who has been associating the women’s body since 1961 said that Macha Leima was born as a platform to voice for the cause of the women of the state.
“For 54 years Macha Leima has been playing role in enhancing women’s empowerment not only I urban and rural areas of the state but also at places where Manipuris stayed in various places of Assam”, Anandi said.
She said that Macha Leima opened its branches at Cachar region of Assam and has been playing vital role in empowering the women’s right of the region.
“I joined Macha Leima when I was studying class IX at TG School and have been taking part at various activities of the women’s Body” Anandi added. She said that Macha Leima has been playing various roles in addition to the empowering of women by organising functions to remember the role played by women of the state during the Seven years devastation, first and second Nupi Lal etc. Besides, Macha Leima have also organised various training to enhance their skill to make the women economically independent. Macha Leima is one among the first women’s organisation to establish Micro Finance in 1997, she added
Speaking at the occasion, Advocate L. Jadumani expressed that in the early days, women were mainly subjected to only household activities. The founders of the Macha Leima, namely Anandi, Borkeyna and founder President Usha have been dedicating themselves and worked for the Manipuri women to step forward.
“Our society is changing day by day. We need to look at the period before 1954 and after 1995 to see a lot of change. Manipuri women’s role in the socio-economic and cultural life of Manipur is significant”, Jadumani said.
L Jadumani Singh stressed that the government should need to take measures proper measure implementation of the Inner Line Permit System, the NRC, and the illegal influx of non-locals.
