Imphal, Sept 22:

Locals of Yairipok Khoirom Mathak Leikai staged a sit-in protest to shut down the plywood factories and sawmills at the Minor Industrial Estate (MIE), Yairipok Khoirom Mathak Leikai, or relocate the MIE permanently from the area.
Speaking to media at the protest, which was organised by JAC Against the Establishment of the Khoirom MIE in residential area, one of the protestors stated that locals want the MIE removed from the industrial estate because the noise made by the five sawmills located in the industrial estate makes life very difficult for the people, with students unable to study, sick people unable to rest, bad road conditions caused by waste from the factories, and people unable to work.
In such a situation, the authorities’ proposed plan to set up five more plywood factories in the MIE is unacceptable to the local public. They want the shutting down or shifting of the MIE to save the health of future generations. The people want the authorities concerned and the CM to look into the matter immediately, the protestor said.
