The League of Indigenous People’s Upliftment (LIPUL) observed the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2026 at Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy, Imphal, focusing on unity and diversity among the indigenous communities of Manipur.
The programme was held under the theme “Unity and Diversity: Strengthening the Indigenous Community of Manipur” and brought together representatives of various indigenous organisations, civil society groups, academics and community leaders.
The observance featured presentations, candle lighting, release of the LIPUL opening song, keynote and addresses by invited speakers, followed by a vote of thanks. The programme was moderated by Dr RK Nimai, retired IAS, and Somorendro Thokchom, president of LIPUL.
Delivering the keynote address, LIPUL Vice-President Phijam Shyamchand highlighted the need for greater unity among the indigenous communities of Manipur and collective efforts to safeguard their rights, identity and heritage.
Speakers at the programme included Dr Waikhom Romesh, Professor, Dhanamanjuri University; Dhiren A. Sadokpam, Editor-in-Chief, The Frontier Manipur; Chabungbam Birendra, Senior Editor, DDK; Turner Raihing, President, Tangkhul Naga Foothills Organisation; Ashang Kasar, Convenor, Native Peoples Committee Manipur; Merachao Inka, Convenor, Joint Tribe Council; Chingdinliu Panmei, President, Rongmei Naga Luh Phwan Manipur and Co-convenor, JTWA; Akhiu Ngaomei, Convenor, Foothills Naga Coordination Committee; Wairohk Hangshing Maring, President, Maring Uparap Assembly; and representatives of COCOMI, AMUCO and JFD.
The event also saw participation from leaders and representatives of different indigenous and civil society organisations, reflecting the organisers’ emphasis on dialogue and collective engagement.
LIPUL organised the programme with the stated motto “We fight for Integrity,” calling attention to the importance of preserving the identity, heritage and collective interests of Manipur’s indigenous communities.
