The last rites of nine individuals, victims of recent violence in Jiribam, were performed on Tuesday in a somber ceremony. The deceased, including six women and children, were transported to Jiribam after post-mortem examinations at Silchar Medical College and Hospital earlier in the day.
The victims are casualties of escalating violence rooted in regional conflicts. Among them were two men killed during an attack on November 11 in the Borobekra Sub-division, allegedly carried out by Kuki-Zo Hmar militants. Another victim, Kh. Athouba Singh, lost his life during protests condemning the brutal killing of six women, further intensifying tensions in the district.
As the bodies arrived in Jiribam, grieving residents gathered to pay their final respects, offering floral tributes and prayers. The community expressed profound sorrow and outrage, calling for peace and justice amidst the turmoil that has claimed innocent lives.
The last rites were conducted at Ningsingkhul Bio-Diversity Park, chosen for its tranquil surroundings. The solemn event underscored the devastating impact of the violence on the region’s residents, many of whom sought solace in the collective mourning.
The deceased were identified Yurembam Rani Devi (60 years), Telem Thoibi Devi (31 years), Laisram Heitombi Devi (25 years), Telem Thajmanbi Devi (8 years), Laisram Chingkheiganba Singh (2.5 years), Laisram Langamba Singh (8 months), Laisram Baren Maitri (60 years), Maibam Kesho (7 years), and Kh. Athouba (22 years).
