Jiribam, Aug 6:
A devastating landslide struck a family in Ahmedabad Part-1 village, Jiribam District, early this morning, leaving one dead and four injured.
The incident occurred around 3:00 am when a landslide from a nearby hillock crashed onto the family’s home. Ten-year-old Nurmona Begum was killed instantly, while her family members—Rani Begum (35), Gulsana Begum (18), Md. Selim Uddin (16), and Sumita Begum (8)—sustained injuries.
Critically injured Sumita Begum has been transferred to Silchar Medical Hospital for urgent treatment. The family’s house, situated dangerously close to the hillock, was particularly vulnerable to the landslide, which was triggered by incessant rainfall over the past few days.
Local authorities responded promptly, rushing to the scene to provide aid and assistance to the affected family. Relief operations are underway, with efforts focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of the survivors.
The tragic incident needs urgent stringent measures to mitigate the risks of landslides, particularly in regions prone to heavy rainfall. This catastrophe serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by communities living in such areas.
Residents of Jiribam and nearby regions have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during the monsoon season. Authorities are also being urged to conduct thorough assessments of vulnerable areas and implement safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
