Imphal, Feb 7:
In another incident of violence, armed Kuki-Zo militants launched an attack at Itham Moirang Purel, located in Imphal East district, on February 7. This recent assault comes just a day after a similar attack occurred at Tumukhong, also within Imphal East district.
The armed assailants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, reportedly initiated the attack at Itham Moirang Purel around 3:10 am. According to sources, their targets included village defense volunteers and security forces. The attack led to a retaliation from the security forces, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thus far.
This latest act of violence follows a pattern observed in the previous day’s incident. On February 6, armed miscreants descended from the hills of Molham Kuki Village towards the sand mining area situated between Nongdam Tangkhul and Tumukhong Meetei Village. They allegedly opened fire indiscriminately at individuals involved in mining and sand extraction. Thankfully, the timely escape of several innocent sand miners prevented casualties.
In response to the attacks, state forces have taken action, recovering trucks from the Tumukhong area that were targeted by the armed Kuki militants during yesterday’s assault.
These consecutive incidents of violence raise concerns about the security situation in the region and the safety of the local communities. The authorities must take decisive measures to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure the protection of civilians from further harm.
