Imphal, Feb 16:
Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) spokesperson Khuraijam Athouba has boldly stated that the Kuki attack on government offices in Churachandpur district last night was not merely against the suspension of a police head constable but a pre-planned effort to destroy the records kept at Churachandpur mini-secretariat regarding their illegal entry into Manipur.
Addressing a press conference at the COCOMI office in Lamphelpat, Athouba said: “At the behest of the suspension of just one head constable, who was also involved in collaborating with Kuki terrorist groups and attacking Meitei villages, the concerned police have taken necessary disciplinary action against the head constable.”
He expressed that COCOMI feels that the kind of violence committed yesterday is not just an angry mob’s reaction to the suspension of the head constable. “It is rather a premeditated and preplanned effort to burn down the mini-secretariat and DC offices to wipe out all the records of immigrant Kuki settlements in Churachandpur District and various other hill districts of the state,” he said.
Explaining why it was not an angry mob, he continued: “There were also similar incidents where three ZEO officials were suspended because of their violation of state laws. At that time, there wasn’t any such violent mob. So, the suspension of one head constable is not the issue. For them, it is just a means, an opportunity to target the mini-secretariat and all government record documents so that they can wipe out all records of their arrival and settlement in the region. It is because of the recent statement made by Manipur CM that all people who arrived after 1961 would be detected and deported. And it is because of that fear, they were targeting the mini-secretariat to destroy all evidence of their arrival.”
He elaborated on the incident from last night and alleged that Kuki-occupied areas have become rogue territories. He said: “The residence of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office was razed down, the Police Station and Superintendent of Police office were vandalized, and the mini-secretariat was burned down. Even India’s national flag, which was flying high in the mini-secretariat complex, was taken down by the Kuki mobs, which is very unfortunate. Such incidents clearly indicate that the Kuki-occupied territories in Manipur’s hill areas have become rogue territories, and it is crucial for the state and the center’s law enforcement agencies to take stringent actions so that such violence doesn’t occur or spread further to other parts of the state.”
