Imphal, May 2:

Khumujamba Meitei Leikai Pattadar Association held a press conference today to address the significance of May 3 and propose its commemoration as “Awakening Day.” The association’s spokesperson highlighted the events of May 3 as a pivotal moment when the community became aware of impending threats and expressed concerns regarding the triggering factors behind the violence that ensued.
During the press conference, the spokesperson of the Khumujamba Meitei Leikai Pattadar Association stated that on May 3, 2023, the residents of Khumujamba Meitei Leikai realized the extent of the danger they faced, as evidenced by the violence that resulted in the destruction of their neighbourhood, which earlier stood at the heart of the Churachandpur town.
The association attributed the cause of violence to measures taken by Chief Minister Biren Singh, particularly regarding the crackdown on poppy cultivation and the identification of refugees from Myanmar. They expressed the opinion that these actions may have incited tensions and triggered the violence that ultimately led to the destruction of Khumujamba Meitei Leikai.
