Imphal, June 22: After the demise of NSCN-K Chairman S.S. Khaplang, Khango Konyak, a retired Lt. Gen. of the outfit has been elected as the new chairman. A press statement of the proscribed group said that Khango Konyak was elected as the new chairman on June 20. The statement added that Khango Konyak was born on 17 th July 1943 at Yangkhao village. He joined the Naga national struggle in the year 1963 at the age of 20. Khango went to East Pakistan on Alee(Foreign) Command in the year 1966 and later in the year 1976 was promoted to 2 nd .Lt. and commanded 50 cadres to China under the leadership of Isak Chishi Swu and Th.Muivah and reached China only in the year 1977. During his long illustrious military career from private to Lt.General, he held many positions of the outfit. He also served as commander of various units, battalions, brigades etc and not only witnessed many crucial battles but achieved many victories against the enemies and brought laurels to the Naga Army on many occasions. In the year 1989, he also served as the Chairman Konyak region and on 30 th April 2011 he was appointed as the Home(Kilo) Kilonser(Minister), GPRN and later elevated to the Vice-Chairman/V ice- President, NSCN/GPRN on 25 th May 2011. On having served the nation for the last 54 years under various capacities and finally elected as the Chairman/ President NSCN/GPRN,the retired General recalled many of his comrades getting slain before him, behind him and besides him by the enemy forces on many countless encounters but he managed to survive by hair breadth without any harm and therefore praised the almighty for preserving his life to this day . He also expressed that he never imagined to reach this highest position and attributed all his success to God’ s providence. He also lamented how many educated and intellectual Naga leaders for selfish, vested interests had led the Nagas astray causing divisions and factions among the Nagas, however , he regardless of the tumultuous situations and enemy’ s propagandas stood firm for what is right and con tinues to serve the NSCN/ GPRN in his humble capacity and further pledges to carry on forward the unfulfilled task envisioned by our departed Chairman S.S.Khaplang. It must also be mentioned that, during his stint in the national work, numerous factional crisis erupted within the Naga family , he however refrained from involving in any of the political crisis of 1988, 2011 and 2015 and with clear conscience.
