Kesuam Solo reclaims its ancestral identity, shedding the name Kasom Khunou

Ukhrul, Feb 2:

In a historic move, the villagers of Kesuam Solo, formerly known as Kasom Khunou under Kasom Khullen sub-division, have officially restored their ancestral village name. This decision, announced on October 20, 2024, marks a significant milestone in the community’s efforts to honor their forefathers and reaffirm their historical roots.
A Journey Back to Ancestry
The renaming is rooted in the village’s migration history, which traces back to Samshok, an ancient Tangkhul Naga settlement. Oral traditions passed down through generations recount how their forefathers migrated in search of suitable land, settling first at Tingyangkwang – Kongkuiram (River Pet) before moving to Alang and eventually establishing their present-day village.
Speaking to this journalist, Qr. Ninghor Siro, the village chief, emphasizeqd the deep historical significance behind the name change. “For decades, we have been identified as Kasom Khunou in government records and among the Tangkhul community. However, this name was an adaptation of our original village name due to variations in pronunciation over time,” he explained.
He further stated that while Kesuam Solo is one of the oldest villages in the area, with vast land resources, its low population has made it vulnerable to land exploitation by neighboring villages. This has strengthened their resolve to reestablish their original identity, ensuring that their ancestral legacy remains intact.
A Collective Decision for the Future
The renaming process was not a sudden decision but the result of in-depth analysis, evaluation, and deliberation by the village elders, leaders, and community members. Under the leadership of Qr. Ninghor Siro, the villagers unanimously affirmed their commitment to restoring the name Kesuam Solo, signifying their respect, loyalty, and pride in their heritage.
The process was also driven by the final wish of the late village headman, Qr. Phaningkhui Siro, who, before his passing, had entrusted the village authorities with the responsibility of restoring the original name. Enli/Ql. Ramreiwon Siro, personal advisor to the village headman and a close family member, stated, “The renaming of our village is not just a symbolic act but a fulfillment of our late leader’s vision. This decision has the full consent of the community, and it reflects our unity and determination to preserve our history.”
Official Recognition and Future Steps
The renaming of the village has followed all necessary legal and administrative processes. A formal representation has been submitted to the concerned authorities, and the decision has been published in local dailies to ensure widespread awareness.
From this day forward, all official documents, records, and communications will bear the name Kesuam Solo, signifying a new yet historically rooted chapter for the village. The leadership urges government agencies, neighboring communities, and the broader Tangkhul society to acknowledge and respect this change.
“This is a moment of pride for us,” concluded Qr. Ninghor Siro. “By restoring the name Kesuam Solo, we are not only reclaiming our identity but also safeguarding the legacy of our ancestors for generations to come.”
With this historic step, Kesuam Solo stands as a beacon of cultural preservation, reminding all Tangkhul villages of the importance of remembering and honoring their roots.
