‘Kanglei Lingo’ App launched to preserve Manipuri language

The Kanglei Lingo Group of Compilation and Communication has launched a mobile application, ‘Kanglei Lingo’, to promote, document and preserve the Manipuri language amid concerns over the growing influence of English and other languages.

The application was introduced to the public today at a programme organised by ICHAL (Imalol Chaokhat Lup) at its Mayaai Loishang in Kangleipak. ICHAL adviser P. Puthiba Mangang attended the programme, while Bidyananda Moirangcha, president of the Kanglei Lingo Group of Compilation and Communication, presented the application.

The group said the initiative aims to strengthen the use of Manipuri and safeguard the linguistic identity of the people of Kangleipak. It expressed concern that increasing dependence on other languages has weakened the use of Manipuri, with many people reportedly unable to identify Manipuri equivalents for common words.

Acknowledging errors and gaps in the current edition, the group appealed to the public to contribute words, corrections and suggestions to make the application more comprehensive in subsequent editions.

The group stressed that preserving and developing the mother tongue is essential to protecting the identity of the people and ensuring its transmission to future generations, particularly amid rapid technological advancement and the growing influence of artificial intelligence.
