Justice Committee pays tribute to 1891 war martyrs

The Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur) today observed the 135th anniversary of the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 by paying floral tribute to the martyrs at Tengol, Khongjom.

The commemoration, organised at Tengol Leikai Community Hall, included a floral tribute (Heitha-Leitha) and the offering of Langban Chara at the memorial of those who fought and died in the war.

Social activist Thingujam Oxford attended as Chief Guest, while Justice Committee chairman Joychandra Konthoujam presided over the programme. Representatives of the Manipuri Bangladesh Youth Cultural Organisation, FPMC, Samram Gram Panchayat, Tengol Leikai Meira Paibi and descendants of Major Heirang Khongjaba and Huirem Lerikhomba also attended.

Speaking on the occasion, Joychandra Konthoujam said the people of Manipur must draw strength from the courage and determination shown by their forefathers in defending the land. He called for collective efforts to protect Manipur and build a society free from divisions.

He said the present generation has a responsibility to carry forward the values and sacrifices of those who defended the land, stressing that Manipur’s future depends on people standing together and working with determination.

The programme also featured a silent condolence for the martyrs, freedom fighters and unsung heroes of the 1891 war.
