JTSA condemns Assam Rifles raid on Waphong Village

The Joint Tribe Students Association (JTSA) has condemned the alleged actions of Assam Rifles personnel during an operation at Waphong Naga Village under Haochong Sub-Division on Wednesday, claiming that the force destroyed bunkers constructed by village guards and seized belongings of Naga volunteers.
In a statement issued by its Information and Publicity wing, the student body said the bunkers had been set up by village guards to safeguard the village and protect civilians amid the ongoing security situation. It alleged that the destruction of the structures has created tension and distress among local residents.
The association also claimed that Assam Rifles personnel confiscated certain belongings of Naga volunteers during the operation.
Further alleging that several rounds of ammunition were fired toward the village at around 11 pm on Wednesday, the JTSA said the incident triggered fear and panic among civilians. It stated that the Naga community has not opened fire against anyone, including security forces, for decades.
The organisation also alleged disparity in security actions, claiming that bunkers in Kuki-dominated areas have remained untouched, while accusing the force of being stringent with Naga villages.
According to the JTSA, the destruction of bunkers constructed by village volunteers was unprecedented since the outbreak of ethnic violence in the state on May 3, 2023. The association described the development as a significant escalation and alleged that the actions reflected bias in the handling of the ongoing conflict.
The student body further expressed concern over what it described as the policies of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the conduct of Assam Rifles, which it claimed have historically caused distress to Naga communities.
The JTSA has urged the authorities to clarify the reasons behind the operation and address safety concerns of the villagers.
