The Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) today launched the week-long observance of World Breastfeeding Week, highlighting the health benefits of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers.
The programme was jointly organised by the Trained Nurses Association of India (TNAI), Manipur State Branch, and the Department of Paediatrics, JNIMS at the Paediatric Outpatient Department (OPD) of the hospital.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, JNIMS Medical Superintendent Dr. Th. Lokeshwar said breastfeeding provides lifelong health benefits not only to infants but also to mothers. He stressed that newborns should be breastfed immediately after birth, as breast milk protects babies from various infections and diseases while promoting healthy growth and development.
Dr. Lokeshwar also pointed out that breastfeeding helps reduce the risk of several illnesses among mothers, including breast cancer. He explained that breast milk contains essential hormones and antibodies that strengthen an infant’s immune system and improve resistance to diseases, while also fostering a stronger emotional bond between mother and child.
Urging mothers to exclusively breastfeed their infants during the recommended period, he said breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure a healthy start to life.
This year’s World Breastfeeding Week is being observed under the theme “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”
As part of the campaign, a photo exhibition highlighting the importance and benefits of breastfeeding was also organised at the Paediatric OPD of JNIMS.
