A group of doctors from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) today voiced serious concerns over the administration and functioning of the State’s premier medical institution at a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club.
The doctors, representing the Teachers’ Association, JNIMS (TA-JNIMS), said healthcare institutions require specialised professional leadership, institutional autonomy and timely administrative decision-making to ensure patient care and medical education.
They expressed concern over the continued uncertainty surrounding the Institute’s administration, including the absence of a regular Director. According to the association, the previous Director’s tenure ended on April 30, 2026, while an officer of the general administration was subsequently given additional charge. That arrangement ended on August 4, and no fresh notification had been issued as of the date of the association’s paper.
The doctors also raised concerns over delayed regularisation and salary-related issues of JNIMS employees, shortages of essential medicines and consumables, and inadequate administrative and financial powers for the Institute.
They further pointed to the impending shortage of Junior Resident Doctors after their tenure ended on August 6, saying delayed recruitment could affect ward and emergency services.
TA-JNIMS called for professionally qualified leadership, greater administrative and financial autonomy, dedicated administrative posts and structured consultation with healthcare professionals in framing policies affecting medical education and healthcare.
