The Women Wing of the Campaign for JUST & FAIR Delimitation (JFD), Manipur, has launched a signature campaign seeking the stand of MLAs on the “NO NRC, NO CENSUS” movement.
The campaign began today as part of the movement, with the JFD Women Wing submitting memoranda containing several demands to legislators and seeking their signatures on the issue.
The memorandum calls for the Census operation in Manipur to be withheld until the National Register of Citizens (NRC), 1951, is updated and the issue of illegal immigration is addressed. The Women Wing also submitted a declaration form seeking the MLAs’ support for the demand.
The legislators approached on the first day were Heikham Dingo Singh of 16-Sekmai (SC) Assembly Constituency, Khongbantabam Ibomcha of 8-Lamlai, Leishangthem Susindro Meitei of 3-Khurai and Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei of 6-Keirao.
According to JFD Women Wing Convenor Sougrakpam Sumati Devi, the MLAs expressed support for the demands raised by the movement during the campaign.
The Women Wing said the signature campaign would continue as an effort to publicly ascertain the positions of elected representatives on the NRC and Census-related demands.
