Imphal, Jan 22:

The Janata Dal (United) Manipur Unit has officially withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government ahead of the 7th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, which is set to begin on February 10, 2025.
In a statement issued by Ksh. Biren Singh, President of JD(U) Manipur Unit, the party clarified its decision, citing internal developments and political alignments. The statement highlighted that six JD(U) candidates were elected in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, but five of them defected to the BJP. The defection of these MLAs is currently under trial before the Speaker’s Tribunal under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution of India.
“Since JD(U) became a part of the INDIA bloc, support to the BJP-led government was withdrawn by notifying the office of the Governor, the Leader of the House (Chief Minister), and the Speaker,” the statement said.
The JD(U) also pointed out the treatment of its lone remaining MLA, Md. Nasir, who was made to sit in the Opposition Bench during the last session of the Assembly. The party reiterated its stance to withdraw support and urged that MLA Md. Nasir be officially recognized as an opposition MLA in the House.
The development comes amidst growing political tensions and realignments in the state, signaling potential challenges for the BJP-led government as it prepares for the upcoming Assembly session.
