The National Programme for Prevention & Control of Deafness, in collaboration with the National Health Mission and the Directorate of Health Services, Manipur, successfully observed “International Week of the Deaf People, 2024,” today at Classic Grande, Chingmeirong.
The event was held under the theme “Sign up for Sign Language Rights” and featured prominent guests, including Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Manipur, as the Chief Guest. Hungyo Worshang, IAS, Special Secretary of Health & Family Welfare, presided over the function, with Dr. O. Sanahanbi Devi, Director of Health Services; Ngangom Uttam Singh, Director of Social Welfare; and Dr. M. Dinesh Singh, State Mission Director of NHM, serving as Guests of Honour.
The program emphasized the significance of sign language rights and aimed to raise awareness about the needs and rights of the deaf community, promoting a more inclusive society. Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh highlighted that it is the responsibility of society to care for differently-abled individuals. “It is their right,” he stated. He explained that the celebration serves as a reminder of the importance of prevention from birth and the need for increased awareness regarding this issue.
