Imphal, Aug 31:
The Social Awareness Service Organisation (SASO) observed International Overdose Awareness Day under the theme “Together We Can” at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal. During the event one-minute silence was observed to honor the victims of drug overdoses.
Speaking at the event, Professor Mc Arun stressed the importance of community involvement in preventing drug overdoses and creating a supportive environment for those battling addiction. He noted that drug use in Manipur saw a significant rise in the 1980s, coinciding with the HIV crisis. He highlighted that both Manipur and Thailand now face some of the highest drug use rates globally. Professor Mc Arun further discussed the establishment of the Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) to combat the HIV epidemic and drug-related issues. However, he critiqued the initial approach of MACS, stating that their early alarmist messaging created unnecessary panic in the community. Over time, MACS improved its strategy, adopting a more informative and supportive approach.
And aiming to raise awareness about the growing issue of drug overdoses and promote solidarity in addressing the crisis.
The event was attended by Dr. Kh Lokeshor, Medical Superintendent of JNIMS, Y. Shasikumar, General Secretary of SASO, Dr. K. Shantibala, Head of the Psychiatry Department, JNIMS, Dr. Beema Haodijam, Deputy Director of MACS, Khogendra Khomdram, President of Editor Guild Manipur, and Professor Mc Arun of Manipur University, as Chief Guest, President, and Guest of Honour, respectively.
