Imphal, Dec 9:
Opposition leaders from the INDIA alliance gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to protest against the ongoing crisis in Manipur, demanding immediate action from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the resignation of the state’s Chief Minister, Biren Singh. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh and CPI leader D. Raja were among the key speakers, criticizing the government’s handling of the situation. MPCC President K. Meghachandra, CLP leader Okram Ibobi MLA K. Ranjit, MLA, Th. Lokeshwar, MLA Surjakumar, CPI (M) Manipur leader Ksh. Shanta among others attended the protest.
Jairam Ramesh emphasized the alliance’s demand for PM Modi to break his silence and address the crisis in Manipur. “The Prime Minister has traveled the world but has not visited Manipur even after 18 months of unrest. The Chief Minister has failed to restore peace, and we demand his resignation. The PM must visit the state, understand the people’s pain, and take action,” Ramesh stated.
Echoing his concerns, CPI leader D. Raja questioned the government’s commitment to national unity, highlighting the silence of PM Modi on the Manipur crisis. “PM Modi and the BJP often claim ‘nation first,’ but we ask, is Manipur not part of the nation? Why is the Prime Minister silent? Why is there no parliamentary debate on the issue? Manipur remains in turmoil, and the Chief Minister must step down,” Raja said.
The protest comes as Manipur continues to face unrest, with no political solution in sight. Earlier, opposition MPs had also protested at Parliament over the Adani matter, although parties like Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party were absent. The winter session of Parliament continues until December 20.
