Imphal, May 11:The Thoubal District MP Candidature Demand Committee has announced today that it is calling off its indefinite bandh from 5 pm this afternoon after thorough consideration of the inconveniences likely to be faced by the public and the students’ community in particular.
The announcement was made by chief convenor of the committer and former member of the state legislative Assembly Y Thambal during a press meet held at Kakching. Nonetheless, he reiterated that the demand for reservation of the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat for a person enlisted as voters in the eight valley Assembly constituencies covered in Outer LS constituency is a very rational one.
The eight ACs whose voters have voting rights but are denied candidature rights in their own parliamentary constituency (Outer Manipur) are Wanjing Tentha, Heirok, Khangabok, Wabagai, Kakching, Sugnu and Hiyanglam in the erstwhile Thoubal district and Jiribam in the newly created Jiribam district.
The committee decided to shorten the strike to just 36 hours while taking a responsible stand for elimination of the impending hardships on students appearing for BSc, BCom and BA examinations and daily wage earners and small time traders, he added.
He stated that even though the bandh has been called off the committee will engage in democratic forms of agitations to pursue its demands.
Meanwhile, reports claimed that supporters of the bandh blocked movement of traffic along the Imphal-Moreh highway at Khongjom.
