The Imphal West district administration has stepped up the verification process under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with nearly 2.6 lakh electors identified under the general category of logical discrepancies requiring verification, District Election Officer (DEO) and Deputy Commissioner Mayanglambam Rajkumar said today.
Addressing a press conference at the DC Office, Rajkumar said the verification drive is being carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that the electoral rolls remain accurate, transparent and error-free ahead of future elections.
He said Booth Level Officers (BLOs), under the supervision of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), have been tasked with conducting door-to-door verification of voter records. The BLOs visit households to verify particulars, hold hearings wherever required and serve notices in cases where discrepancies are detected before taking action in accordance with the electoral rules.
The DEO clarified that the majority of the discrepancies identified are of a routine nature and do not necessarily indicate irregularities. These include spelling mistakes, variations in surnames, title-related errors and other clerical inconsistencies that require correction to maintain the accuracy of the electoral database.
Rajkumar said the district administration has adopted a systematic and well-coordinated approach in consultation with the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur, and the Election Commission of India to ensure the timely completion of the revision exercise without causing inconvenience to genuine electors.
Appealing for public cooperation, he urged recognised political parties, Booth Level Agents (BLAs), civil society organisations, local clubs and community leaders to assist the administration by creating awareness about the ongoing verification drive and encouraging residents to cooperate with BLOs during household visits.
On the issue of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the DEO said 1,684 enumeration forms have been forwarded through the Chief Electoral Officer to the respective District Election Officers across the state, while 470 such forms have been received by Imphal West district for necessary action.
He assured that the district administration would extend all possible assistance to displaced voters to facilitate enrolment, correction of particulars and resolution of electoral roll-related issues during the Special Intensive Revision process, ensuring that no eligible voter is deprived of his or her electoral rights.
