Impasse at Manipur University; Main gate shuts; Dean office nearly burnt

Imphal, Dec 26: Tension continues to remain high at Manipur University over differences between two groups of students in conducting election for the Manipur University Students’ Union.
At around 10 am today, a large number of students today staged protest inside the University complex against the indefinite postponement of MUSU election which was earlier scheduled to hold on December 28. The irate students vandalised properties of the A-Block office and later shut the main gate of the Manipur University.
Earlier yesterday evening, a group of students tried to burn the office of the Dean of Students’ Welfare, however, a police team timely intervene and extinguish the fire from causing damage to the University.
Mention may be made that Manipur University Students’ Union Election Committee had issued election notification for the students’ election on December 20. According to the notification students body election is scheduled on December 28. However, another notification of the Manipur University Students’ Union Election Committee had postponed the election indefinitely.
Source said that, some sections of students of the Manipur University had strongly objected the conduct of Election on December 26 on the ground that many tribal students of the University have gone back to their home to celebrate Christmas day and New year. Soon after the notification for postponement of the Election another group of students staged protest by vandalising the A Block and shutting the University main gate. A police team which rushed the spot picked up 6 student protestors and drive out other students from the A block. The six students were later released
