An Impact TV reporter was assaulted by a Manipur Police official during the coverage of an IDP protest rally this afternoon at Singjamei Akampat.
R.C. Mangang, an Impact TV reporter, recounted a harrowing experience of being assaulted by a police officer while covering the situation at the Akampat relief camp in Imphal East. According to RC Mangang, he and his Impact TV crew arrived at the camp and parked their car. While his cameraman was filming on the other side, a sudden ruckus broke out. Mangang took out his phone and began walking and filming the scene.
“Suddenly, a Sub-Inspector came and asked me why I was filming,” he said. “I told him I was from the press, but before I could take out my press card, he assaulted me.”
RC Mangang described the attack in detail: “The Sub-Inspector punched me four to five times, broke my phone and camera, tore my clothes, and even threatened to kill me. He also assaulted me with his weapon.” As a result of the assault, he sustained an injury to his right chin.
When other press staff arrived at the scene, they observed the police requesting them not to film them claiming they were also with the public after assaulting the member of the press.
The police officer who assaulted Mangang could be seen wearing the name badge Sh. Nikhil Singh in the video which is now circulated in the social media.
RC Mangang has demanded stringent action against the Manipur police Sub-Inspector involved in the assault.
