Imagi Meira has condemned the public welcome accorded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Imphal, questioning why residents who are denied freedom of movement in their own state chose to greet him. The women’s collective also announced a 10-day ultimatum demanding restoration of free movement on national highways, adequate arrangements for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and repeal of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) extension, warning of democratic protests if the demands are ignored.
Speaking at a press conference at the Press Club, Imphal, spokesperson Thokchom Sujata said, “You went to welcome PM Modi at Kangla when we ourselves are not allowed free movement in our own state. On what ground do we have to welcome him?”
She accused BJP Manipur president A. Sharda Devi of misleading the media and the public. “What have our leaders asked PM Modi during his visit while Kuki MLAs continue to demand Separate Administration?” she questioned.
Sujata denounced the extension of the SoO pact and pointed to the hardships faced by IDPs. “We are selling ourselves. SoO has been extended. IDPs are suffering and cannot go back to their own homes. What is the point of celebration?” she remarked.
The Imagi Meira spokesperson also criticized Modi’s choice to visit Churachandpur before Imphal, stating that as the state capital and home to all communities, Imphal should have been prioritized.
On Saturday evening, Sujata, along with a large number of Meira Paibi, attempted to enter Kangpokpi district but were stopped by central security forces at Kanglatombi. According to her, the security personnel cited threats to their safety. She, however, questioned why the forces could not protect their lives instead of blocking their passage, alleging discrimination against the Meitei community.
