Civil society organization Imagi Meira has urged all legislators to convene a state assembly session to adopt a strong resolution for resolving the ongoing crisis in Manipur. Speaking at the Manipur Press Club, Sujata, the Convenor of Imagi Meira, expressed dissatisfaction with how both the central and state governments have managed the situation.
Sujata criticized the government for treating citizens as scapegoats, pointing out that most victims of the conflict are innocent civilians, including women and children. She referenced several tragic incidents, including the killing of a 34-year-old woman farmer in Bishnupur district by Kuki militants and the recent murder of eight civilians—two men, three women, and three children, including an eight-month-old infant—who were held hostage before being executed.
Sujata also condemned the actions of senior police officer Nector (Combat), alleging his involvement in the deaths of innocent students in Jiribam.
“People are angry, and they are venting their frustration by targeting the residences of elected representatives,” she said, while denouncing the violent responses. Sujata called on legislators to understand the grievances of the people and take decisive action.
Highlighting the urgency of the crisis, Sujata questioned why the Chief Minister has not taken a cabinet decision to convene an assembly session. She emphasized the need for all MLAs, regardless of political affiliation, to work together and adopt a unanimous resolution to bring peace and stability to the state.
The ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has claimed over 220 lives and displaced thousands since May 2020. Civil society organizations like Imagi Meira are now amplifying calls for decisive political action to address the crisis and restore normalcy.
