IGNTU-RCM students’ union resumes agitation; Boycotts classes indefinitely

Imphal, Jan 16: Students union of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University has boycotted classes indefinitely and locked the main gate of the University as the government fails to fulfil the demands of the union.

Speaking to media, President, IGNTU-RCM, K. Bowang Kho said that the class boycott is a part of their ongoing agitation against the incompletion of various infrastructures of the University. He said that the students’ union put a halt on their agitation few months back following the assurance of fulfilling their demands by the government of Manipur. As the government of Manipur did not convert their promise into action the union resorted to resume the agitation. Hence all the classes have been boycotted indefinitely from today. He added that the main campus at Makhan Village which was to start with black topping of approach road, water supply and electricity although the Government of Manipur had given assurance to the Vice Chancellor TV Katimani and Director incharge, IGNTU-RCM in the meeting held on 26th March, 2014. The university building which is under construction at Makhan village was supposed to be inaugurated during the recent visit of PM Narendra Modi in Imphal. However, the University is yet to be inaugurated as its construction is still incomplete. Bowang further said that the union is all set to start various form of agitations regarding their demands.

It could be noted that the students’ union has been demanding immediate approval/inclusion of external study tour for 4th Semester students, immediate correction and issue of educational certificates for all the passed out students, transparency on NEC project and administrative action against erring officials, lack of students amenities in the RCM have to be made available before the new academic session and non completion of the original site at Makhan village should be taken seriously and handing over should be done on or before the next session.
