Hongpei Killings Trigger Mass Uprising: Ukhrul district witnessed a complete shutdown

Special Correspondent
Ukhrul, March 31:
The Tangkhul region in Ukhrul district witnessed an unprecedented wave of public outrage and collective mobilisation on Monday as a lightning total shutdown paralysed Ukhrul town following the killing of four NSCN-IM cadres at Hongpei on March 28, 2026.
Responding to what has been described as a deeply disturbing and tragic incident, the Tangkhul Public Mass Movement called for an emergency total closure across Ukhrul. The shutdown was observed peacefully, yet its impact was absolute — markets remained deserted, shops pulled down shutters, educational institutions suspended classes, offices closed, and normal daily life came to a complete halt.
Despite heightened public emotions, no untoward incident was reported during the shutdown, reflecting disciplined participation by citizens determined to register a unified protest.
Following intensive consultations and a series of deliberations with civil society organisations (CSOs), Tangkhul apex frontal bodies jointly formulated a charter of demands aimed at defusing escalating tensions gripping the region.
In a strongly worded joint declaration signed by five apex Tangkhul Longnao presidents, two crucial demands were placed before the concerned authorities and leadership of the Wung Tangkhul Region.
The first demand calls for the immediate production of the two alleged main culprits accused of shooting and killing the four Eastern Flank cadres at Hongpei. The individuals identified as Qr. Athot of Sihai Khunou village and Qr. Star of Leiram Khullen village must be produced before the Tangkhul Naga Long within 12 hours, effective from 2 PM on March 30, 2026, and in sound mental condition.
The second demand carries a stern warning: should the NSCN-IM fail to hand over the accused within the stipulated timeframe, the entire Tangkhul population across the region will withdraw mandate and cease all forms of cooperation with the Wung Tangkhul Region (WTR).
The situation remains highly sensitive following the violent aftermath of the Hongpei killings. On the evening of March 29, an enraged mob reportedly set ablaze the WTR office located at Har Farm in Ukhrul, completely destroying the establishment — a dramatic indication of mounting public anger.
The joint press statement was endorsed by prominent Tangkhul apex leaders including Qr. Sword Vashum, President of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL); Qr. Kashung Tennyson, President of Tangkhul Naga Awunga Long (TNAL); Ql. Thingreiphi Lungharwoshi, President of Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL); Qr. Ramreichan Keishing, President of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS); and Qr. Ringphapam Kasar, President-in-Charge of Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL).
Observers note that the developments mark one of the strongest collective responses by Tangkhul civil society in recent years, underscoring growing public demand for accountability, justice, and restoration of unity within the Naga movement.
As the deadline approaches, tension continues to mount across Ukhrul, with the region anxiously awaiting the next course of action that may determine whether calm returns or the crisis deepens further.
