Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam today informed the State Assembly that the government is committed to the resettlement and rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), while also stating that police are investigating the attack on three border villages in Kamjong district earlier this year.
Responding to questions raised by Congress MLA Kangujam Ranjit Singh, the Home Minister said the resettlement and rehabilitation of IDPs would be completed once the law and order situation in the state improves.
On compensation for movable assets lost by IDPs during the crisis, Govindas said no compensation had been provided so far. However, replying to a supplementary question on the timeframe for compensating such losses, he said the government would examine the matter after the resettlement and rehabilitation of the displaced people were completed.
The Home Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the welfare of people affected by the crisis and said their rehabilitation remained a priority.
In response to another question from Kangujam Ranjit Singh, Govindas said the state police were investigating the attack on Z Choro, Namlee and Wanglee villages in Kamjong district on May 7, 2026.
The three villages are located close to the international border with Myanmar. According to the Home Minister, armed militants attacked the villages, leaving one person injured and 23 houses burnt down.
He said the state government had assessed the damage caused by the attack, with the total loss estimated at more than Rs 5 crore. Reconstruction of houses in the affected villages has already begun, he added.
Govindas also informed the House that he, along with some MLAs, had visited the affected border villages with relief materials shortly after the incident. He said the villages were located in remote areas and added that adequate security arrangements had since been put in place.
Asked specifically whether the Myanmar-based armed group KNF(B) was involved in the attack and arson, the Home Minister said the investigation was still underway and it would be premature to comment on the involvement of the group or any other particular armed organisation.
