The Department of Physics, G.P. Women’s College, observed Hiroshima Day 2026 today at the Library Hall of G.P. Women’s College, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal of G.P. Women’s College, Prof. L. Rajen Singh, highlighted the historical significance of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War. He stated that Hiroshima was bombed with the atomic bomb “Little Boy” on August 6, followed by the bombing of Nagasaki with “Fat Man” three days later. He noted that despite “Fat Man” being more powerful, the number of casualties was higher in Hiroshima.
Prof. Rajen Singh said the explosions generated extremely high temperatures at their core and released immense destructive energy, causing widespread devastation, loss of lives and long-term environmental and health impacts. He observed that while nuclear technology has peaceful applications, including electricity generation, its use in warfare resulted in catastrophic human suffering. He stressed the importance of learning from history and working collectively towards lasting peace.
Head of the Department of Physics, L. Tamphasana Devi, recalled learning about the Hiroshima bombing during her childhood and spoke on the devastating impact of nuclear weapons. She appealed for a world free from nuclear weapons and urged everyone to work collectively towards promoting peace and harmony.
Coordinator, IQAC and Head of the Department of Geography, Prof. Md. Baharuddin Shah, explained the significance of observing Hiroshima Day and stressed the importance of spreading awareness about the consequences of nuclear warfare.
A documentary film on Hiroshima Day was screened during the programme. Prizes were also distributed to the winners of the Quiz Competition and Slogan Writing Competition organised as part of the observance.
The programme was attended by Programme Coordinator (NSS), DMU and Head of the Department of Chemistry, K. Sanaton Sharma; faculty members including Dr. Pukhrambam Sushma Devi and Dr. Thoudam Vilip Singh of the Department of Physics, along with staff and students of G.P. Women’s College.
