Heavy floods submerge parts of Manipur, disrupting daily life

Several areas in Manipur have been severely affected by widespread flooding following days of relentless rainfall across the state and its neighbouring regions. Low-lying zones in Khurai, Checkon, Palace compound and Khabam witnessed severe waterlogging as rivers overflowed and embankments gave way, particularly along the Imphal, Iril, and Imphal rivers.
The situation prompted authorities and Assam Rifles to issue helpline numbers to assist residents who were stranded in their homes. Major roads across the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching have been submerged, bringing transportation to a standstill.
In response, hundreds of local residents mobilised with bamboo poles and sandbags in an attempt to reinforce riverbanks and prevent further breaches. Power supply in several localities was cut off as a precautionary measure, while some government buildings, including the premises of All India Radio, were flooded. Despite this, AIR continued to remain operational.
The state government has issued an orange alert, urging people to take all necessary precautions. According to the flood control room, the Imphal River has crossed the high flood level, while the Nambul and Iril Rivers are also flowing at dangerous levels — recorded at 782.1 metres and 784 metres respectively.

Sekmai River in Kakching district remains below danger level
Despite the continuous rainfall over the past few days that has led to important rivers running in spate in the Imphal valley, the Sekmai River in Kakching district remains below the danger mark, according to Ksh. Amarjit, Assistant Engineer, Sub-Division–III, Water Resources Department.
Speaking to the media, Amarjit informed that there has been no report of embankment breaches along the Sekmai River, which flows through several areas including Kakching, Pallel, Keirak, and Wabagai.
He also mentioned that the Chakpi River, which passes through Serou in Kakching district, is currently running five feet lower compared to its level on the previous day.
As per the latest readings taken around 11:00 am, the water level at the Sekmai barrage was recorded at 774.05 metres, Amarjit added.

Floodwaters have inundated many neighbourhoods, including Wangkhei, Kongba, Nambol, Thangmeiband, Naoremthong, Iroishemba, and other surrounding areas. Many families have begun relocating to safer locations as the water continues to rise.
The agricultural sector has also suffered a major setback, with vast farmlands in Bishnupur, Imphal East and West, Kakching, and Thoubal districts submerged. Fish farmers have reported total losses as fish ponds have been completely flooded, raising fears of a significant economic blow to local aquaculture this year.
As of now, there are no reports of casualties, but the damage to property, livelihoods, and infrastructure remains substantial. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are coordinating relief efforts to mitigate further impact.
