Imphal, Sept 12:
The Manipur Governor’s Secretariat has responded to climate activist Licypriya Kangujam following her negative remarks about Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya’s visit to Assam on August 11, 2024. Kangujam had criticized the Governor’s absence from Manipur during the ongoing crisis, leading to a clarification from the Secretariat regarding his official duties.
In an official statement, the Secretariat pointed out that Kangujam was not fully informed about the Governor’s responsibilities. It explained that Governor Acharya holds a dual role, being the full-time Governor of Assam while also managing additional responsibilities for Manipur. As such, his duties require him to travel between the two states and occasionally attend important official meetings outside the region.
The statement noted that Governor Acharya was in Imphal until July 31, after which he traveled to Delhi for official engagements. Upon his return, he visited Imphal on August 7 and stayed until August 11, during which he convened high-level security meetings with civil and military officials. The discussions focused on addressing the ongoing turmoil in the state. He also met with representatives of student unions and organizations, informing them about the steps taken by both the Central and State governments to restore peace and resolve the crisis through peaceful dialogue.
The Governor’s Secretariat emphasized that Acharya prioritizes Manipur during the crisis, spending more time in Imphal than in his home state of Assam, despite his many obligations there. The Secretariat further clarified that the Governor’s visit to Assam was for an important official commitment and assured that he would return to Manipur shortly to continue monitoring the situation.
The Secretariat expressed disappointment over Kangujam’s comments, calling them “unfortunate” and not reflective of a “sensible citizen” given the Governor’s dedication to resolving the crisis in Manipur.
