Imphal, Feb 28:
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has extended the deadline for the voluntary surrender of looted and illegally held arms and ammunition by seven more days. The new deadline is set for 4 PM on March 6, 2025. This decision follows the expiry of the previous deadline on February 27, as per his earlier order issued on February 20.
A statement issued through the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) mentioned that the extension comes in response to demands from both valley and hill regions. “Upon expiry of the seven-day deadline for voluntary surrender, there has been a demand from various sections to extend the period. After considering the request, I have decided to extend the deadline up to 4 PM on March 6, 2025. All those still in possession of such arms are urged to surrender them at the nearest Police Station, Outpost, or Security Forces Camp within this extended period,” the Governor stated.
He further noted that the initial appeal made on February 20 had received a positive response from people across communities, especially the youth in both valley and hill areas. “This is the last opportunity for everyone concerned to contribute to peace, communal harmony, and the security of our society. Those in possession of such weapons are strongly encouraged to surrender them within the given timeframe without fear of prosecution,” the statement emphasized.
The Governor assured that no punitive action would be taken against individuals who voluntarily surrender their weapons during this extended period. However, strict legal action will be enforced against those found in possession of illegal or looted arms after the deadline. He also cautioned that security forces and police will launch extensive operations following the deadline to recover any remaining illicit weapons.
“This is a crucial step towards safeguarding the future of our youth and ensuring the security of our society. We once again urge all those still holding such weapons to avail themselves of this final opportunity,” the statement concluded.
