Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla is reportedly displeased with the low turnout of legislators during the inaugural session of the Sangai Tourism Festival 2025, with only two MLAs attending the ceremony at Hapta Kangjeibung. Despite extensive preparations and significant budgetary expenditure, the main venue appeared largely deserted, raising concerns over the event’s execution and public engagement.
The Sangai Festival, regarded as Manipur’s premier tourism showcase, witnessed an unusually low footfall on its opening day. Stalls that typically draw heavy crowds remained empty, and security personnel far outnumbered visitors, marking a stark contrast to previous editions.
Sources said the Governor’s dissatisfaction was further compounded by recent issues involving IGP Themthing Ngashangva, following a complaint lodged by the office of Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba. The handling of the matter has reportedly heightened tensions amid an already strained atmosphere.
Governor Bhalla, who places high importance on the festival’s success under directives from the central government, is said to be closely monitoring developments. With criticism mounting over poor attendance and political indifference, the state government is likely to submit an explanatory note to the Union Home Minister.
Ground reports indicate that prevailing tensions, community mistrust, and unresolved grievances have discouraged public participation. Many residents feel the state’s current environment is not conducive to celebration, highlighting a growing disconnect between administrative priorities and public sentiment.
