Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was honoured with a cash award of Rs 30 lakh by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya during a felicitation ceremony for India’s medal-winning weightlifting contingent on Monday.
Mirabai, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals, led India’s impressive weightlifting campaign at the Glasgow Games.
The Sports Minister felicitated all the medallists, presenting cash awards of Rs 30 lakh to the gold medallist, Rs 20 lakh each to the silver medallists, and Rs 10 lakh to the bronze medallist. India concluded the competition with eight medals from 11 weight categories—one gold, six silver and one bronze—while also setting multiple Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records.
Congratulating the athletes, Mandaviya said their achievements had made the nation proud, adding that every medal won by the Indian weightlifters was celebrated across the country and acknowledged in Parliament. He also praised the coaches, including Dronacharya Awardee Vijay Sharma, saying their contribution was instrumental in producing champions.
Besides Mirabai Chanu, the Indian contingent included silver medallists Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja and Gyaneshwari Yadav, and bronze medallist Bindyarani Devi. The Minister reaffirmed the Central Government’s commitment to supporting athletes and strengthening India’s sporting ecosystem.
