Former ICHAM’s president Rajendro rejects allegations of obstructing Indo–Myanmar border fencing

Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) has never stopped the border fencing work along the Indo–Myanmar border; it only raised concerns about the loss of India’s territory when the construction of border pillars began in 2023 and urged that the work be done properly. This was stated by former ICHAM president, N. Boy @ Rajendro, in response to various allegations that the organisation had obstructed the fencing process. Speaking to reporters at the Manipur Press Club this morning, Rajendro said that certain groups are spreading false claims that ICHAM halted the border fencing to gain political mileage. He alleged that the Congress and some political parties aligned with it have been irresponsibly accusing ICHAM without verifying facts.
Explaining the background, he said that on July 26, 2013, ICHAM received reports from various local bodies regarding the shifting of a border pillar into Manipur’s territory. After the issue of the border pillar at Govajang village near Moreh was raised, ICHAM submitted a memorandum to the then Chief Minister on August 2, 2013, and constituted a committee named Committee on Protection of Land in Border Fencing Manipur. Following this, on August 12, the state Cabinet held a meeting, after which Principal Secretary (Home) Dr. Suresh Babu formed a High Power Committee to examine the matter.
Rajendro further said that Dr. Suresh Babu visited Moreh on August 27, 2013, and after an inspection, informed that the fencing being constructed at Govajang village was not border fencing but security fencing. He added that after the High Power Committee’s intervention, an all-political party meeting was convened to review the border alignment along the Manipur–Myanmar boundary.
