Imphal, Mar 9:
Alfred Kan-Ngam Arthur, Congress leader and former MLA from the Ukhrul Assembly constituency, launched a scathing attack on both the BJP-led government at the center and the state, accusing them of promoting a false narrative of development and youth empowerment. Speaking to media personnel at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, Alfred accused the BJP of failing to bring about meaningful change, particularly among the youth, while persistently blaming the Congress party during election seasons.
Highlighting the lack of tangible benefits provided to the youth, Alfred pointed to Sangshak village in Ukhrul where, despite 10 years of BJP rule, there has been no improvement in the economic status of families. He criticized both the central and state governments for their failure to fulfill their promises of empowering the youth, contrasting it with the inclusive approach taken by the Congress party.
Alfred emphasized the decline in social security under the BJP government, citing the drastic reduction in the number of days of employment provided under MNREGA compared to the previous Manmohan Singh-led government.
Turning to infrastructure development, Alfred cited the example of the two-lane highway construction between Yaingangpokpi to Fins Corner Ukhrul. He highlighted the inefficiencies in the contracting process, where a large firm subcontracted the work to smaller firms, resulting in substantial financial losses and poor execution of the project.
Alfred condemned the mismanagement of public funds, stating that despite claims of investing crores of rupees in road construction, the reality on the ground did not reflect such investments. He stressed the importance of prioritizing youth employment and criticized the government’s failure to provide meaningful employment opportunities to millions of young Indians.
Alfred concluded by asserting that the nation is heading towards a state of zero progress and called for urgent action to address the unemployment crisis facing the youth. He rejected the notion of trivializing jobs such as tea selling as employment, emphasizing the importance of preserving the dignity of the youth and ensuring justice in employment opportunities.
