Former Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh, along with three BJP MLAs—Heikham Dingo, Tongbram Robindro, and Dr. Sapam Ranjan—departed for Delhi today in a move widely seen as a push to restore a popularly elected government in the state. MLA Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, currently in Guwahati, is also expected to join the delegation. Sources indicate that additional MLAs, Konthoujam Govindas and Thounaojam Shyamkumar , will follow tomorrow to strengthen the team.
The delegation is expected to meet BJP Northeast Coordinator Sambit Patra before seeking an appointment with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Although no official confirmation has been made regarding meetings with the Prime Minister or the BJP National President, political observers say the visit signals an intensified effort by the party to press the central leadership for decisive action on Manipur’s governance.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, following N. Biren Singh’s resignation as Chief Minister on February 9. The state continues to reel from over two years of ethnic violence that claimed at least 250 lives, left more than 1,000 injured, displaced roughly 60,000 people, and deeply fractured communities along ethnic lines. President’s Rule has now been extended until February 13, 2026, amid mounting criticism from political quarters and civil society for the prolonged absence of elected governance.
The visit by N. Biren Singh and the BJP team comes amid growing demands for the immediate installation of a government that reflects the will of the people. Political analysts suggest that the delegation’s push for intervention at the highest levels of the party could set the stage for a major decision on the state’s political future, potentially redefining power dynamics in a state still struggling to recover from the impact of prolonged violence.
The unfolding developments in Delhi are being closely watched in Imphal, as citizens and political stakeholders await clarity on when and how Manipur might return to a popularly elected administration.
