Forest Minister Th. Shyamkumar inaugurates veterinary hospital and Slow Loris enclosure at Manipur Zoological Garden

Forest and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar today inaugurated the Veterinary Hospital building and Slow Loris enclosure at Manipur Zoological Garden, Lamphelpat. He was accompanied by Kereilhouvi Angami, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Task Force (PCCF & HoFF), Gaithaolu Thaimei, Director, Manipur Zoological Garden and Forest officials.

Addressing the Media persons at Manipur Zoological Garden, Minister Th. Shyamkumar said that the Veterinary Hospital has an operation theatre, X-ray room, examination room, lab, sterile room, doctor’s room, staff room, inpatient ward for herbivores and carnivores quarantine rooms. The veterinary team includes Veterinary surgeon and animal attendants to take care of the medical needs of the animals.

He further said that depending upon the severity of the illness/disease, there is provision to either isolate or shift the animal to in-patient ward or keep the animal for further care, monitoring and treatment. Quarantine unit will accommodate newly acquired animals and sick animals suspected for contagious diseases, he added.

Minister Shyamkumar appealed to the people of the State to protect and preserve the wildlife of the State and stated that human beings cannot live without the Biodiversity. He further appealed to the people to contribute in protecting and preserving the wildlife and environment of the State. He was hopeful that the Veterinary Hospital will be able to timely check the health condition of the animals in the Zoo.

Regarding the inauguration of the Slow Loris enclosure, he said that the enclosure has three paddock area (animal display area) with an area of 150 sq m each to meet the animal’s biological requirements, movements, night shelter, kraal and keeper’s gallery. Slow Loris being a nocturnal and secretive animal, each paddock has tree, dead branches as enrichment component to escape from direct interaction with visitors and to escape and save itself from aggression of other animals, he added.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has approved Rs 216.77 lakhs as 90 percent share and Rs 24.018 lakh as the 10 percent State share to the Manipur Zoo for the year 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively.

The inauguration function was also attended by the Forest officers including Dr. DD Haokip, Additional PCCF (NBM & MP), State Mission Director (National Bamboo Mission); Th. Mohendra Pratap Singh, CCF; Seraphui Vashum, CCF/APM; RK Amarjit, DFO Central Forest Division; Kh. Shyam CCF; Shri John Sha, DFO Senapati; E. Home Singh, DFO Tengnoupal; Robert Sheilam, DFO Soil and Water Conservation Division-II; SW Suisa DFO Soil and Water Conservation Division-I; Th. Lokendra Singh, DFO/Social Forestry Division among others.
