Football fever grips Imphal as Durand Cup kicks off

The heart of Manipur is beating to the rhythm of football today as the much-awaited ‘Imphal Derby’ between local giants TRAU FC and NEROCA FC sets the 134th edition of the Indian Oil Durand Cup in motion. Kicking off at 4 PM at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium, the opening Group F clash has turned into more than just a football match—it’s a celebration of Manipur’s undying love for the beautiful game.
Excitement surged through the city hours before kickoff, with football fans pouring into the stadium as early as noon. Long queues and packed stands reflected the frenzy, and social media videos showed tickets changing hands in the black market at prices ranging from ¹ 300 to ¹ 500—further proof of the match’s electric anticipation.
Group F this year brings together four formidable teams: TRAU FC and NEROCA FC representing Manipur, the Indian Navy Football Team, and Real Kashmir FC. Only the top two will progress to the next stage, making every point critical in this tightly contested group.
The Imphal leg of the tournament—one of Asia’s oldest, dating back to 1888—is being jointly organized by the Indian Army and the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Manipur. The local fixtures are scheduled to run until August 12, with Khuman Lampak at the centre of the action.
In recognition of the tournament’s cultural and sporting significance, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla declared a half-day holiday for all government offices and educational institutions across the state, effective from 1 PM. The move aims to encourage public participation in the opening ceremony and further fuel Manipur’s rising sports spirit.
The announcement was met with applause from football lovers statewide, who hailed the gesture as a nod to Manipur’s growing reputation as a football powerhouse and a hub for emerging talent.
With the stands expected to be at full capacity and passions running high, the Imphal Derby promises not just fierce competition on the pitch but also a grand celebration of sportsmanship, unity, and regional pride. For Manipur, hosting the Durand Cup isn’t just an honour—it’s a declaration that football lives and thrives in the heart of the Northeast.
