Imphal, April 23:

The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS), Manipur, has announced that it will observe May 3, 2025, as a “Day of Remembrance and Reflection” at Yumnam Khunou Community Hall, Imphal East. The event will be held under the theme “Bridging Divides for Shared Future.”
The observance marks two years since the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3, 2023. FOCS has described the incident as a coordinated assault by armed illegal immigrants targeting the indigenous Meitei population, characterizing it as an undeclared war that inflicted lasting damage on the social and cultural fabric of Manipur.
According to a statement issued by FOCS, the violence led to the loss of innocent lives, the destruction of homes, and the displacement of thousands, particularly in regions such as Churachandpur, Moreh, Imphal West, Imphal East, and Kangpokpi. Many of those displaced, especially Meitei families, continue to live in relief camps and makeshift shelters, grappling with uncertainty and trauma.
The organization also highlighted what it sees as a lack of timely intervention by the state during the crisis. In response to the vacuum in security and governance, many young people reportedly assumed the role of village volunteers, stepping up to protect their communities. FOCS lauded their courage, describing their actions as a powerful reflection of the resilience and will to survive among the affected populations.
Through the upcoming event, FOCS aims not only to remember the lives lost but also to promote healing and dialogue for a more unified future. The observance is expected to draw participants from across communities, civil society organizations, and the general public.
